Vicarious Trauma and Compassion Fatigue
ONLINE
Wednesday 13th November 2024 2-3pm
The most effective way to protect ourselves from the negative impact of stress is to
educate ourselves on the signs and symptoms that show and tell us that we are feeling
‘full’ and likely to become overwhelmed. We often need reminding of how to make time
to care for our own physical and mental health and how to set emotional boundaries.
Once we become more aware of when our ability to cope is reducing, we can practice
regulating strategies that help us to manage and remain healthy.
This training will enable you to…
- Define vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, burnout,
resilience, and vicarious resilience.
- Discuss how working with trauma affects you.
- Identify strategies, that enhance both personal and professional resilience.
Please note that this workshop is ONLINE using TEAMS. Joining instructions will be sent
out via email following booking confirmation.

How to use Sand and Water to help children express themselves in a therapeutic space
Delivered by Clare Sullivan (Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, Trainer & Therapeutic Team Manager)
Wednesday 22nd January 2025 9.30-12
The sensory play that sand and water can provide enables children to self-regulate through the tactile experiences of shaping, pouring, burying, sinking, hiding, and digging. There is a grounding effect of sand and water play in how it can create a space for the child to express themselves non-verbally. In this kind of play children often subconsciously create a representation of their inner world and how they see themselves in that world. They can use the meditative elements of sand and water to process and make sense of difficult feelings. As an adult providing sensitive guidance through this play, you can be curious and show genuine interest in what the child is trying to say.
This course will enable you to:
- Understand the theory associated with sand and water play.
- Explore the benefits of sand and water play for children of all ages.
- Understand how sand and water play opportunities can be created.
- Learn how to be curious about children’s play in sand and water.

Understanding the power of metaphor in helping children process big emotions

Venue: The Bungalow Partnership. Rosewood School Site. The Garth. Coulby Newham. Middlesbrough. TS8 0UG
Wednesday 2nd April 2025 1-3.30pm

Some people find it challenging to verbalise how they are feeling and for many children they simply don’t have the developed language skills to express their worries and muddles. - Understand the key principles of using metaphor within your work.
- Explore the impact of metaphor.

Making Sense of Behaviour when the Behaviour Makes No Sense
Led by Clare Sullivan — Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, Trainer & Therapeutic Team Manager
Wednesday 11th June 2025 4-5pm
Online
This twilight micro training session provides practitioners with an opportunity to explore how we can make better sense of the needs of young people by viewing the presentation, behaviours and relational perceptions of young people through a different lens. Often when we are struggling to connect with a young person or understand their needs and how to meet them, it’s because we are not quite looking at the situation from their position, with their experiences and fears. We’d love for you to join us as we explore ways to suspend our go-to assumptions about what behaviour might mean and to instead apply curiosity, compassion and authenticity to get to the underpinning needs of the young person and to then be able to respond and support those needs more successfully.
This training is for you if you want to …
- Explore how to unpick and understand the behaviours and presentations of the children and young people you support
- Gain awareness and confidence in identifying the underpinning needs and feelings being masked by the outward behaviours of the young person
- Consider the role of emotional regulation in soothing and dampening alerted states and how to scaffold opportunities for the development of resilience and confidence.
