Beat Anaphylaxis Friendly Schools – pilot schools
Deadline: Friday 16th February 2024
It is estimated that 1 in 50 school-age children have peanut allergy, a condition accounting for around half of all anaphylaxis reactions. Combining this and the incidence of other food allergies, means that there is often more than one child per school class at significant risk of anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis Campaign report that 17% of fatal food-anaphylaxis reactions in children happen in learning environments.
The Network’s Asthma Leadership Group and the Beat Anaphylaxis project team are looking to identify a number of primary school settings across the North East and North Cumbria to work with us to develop, localise and embed a Beat Anaphylaxis Friendly Schools (BAnFS) Accreditation Framework, based on some established models of good practice.
A bespoke training and accreditation package will be developed for education setting staff following a co-design process with stakeholders in pilot schools prior to implementation of this programme at these sites across the region.
Pilot schools will support development work taking place during the remainder of this academic year. The Beat Anaphylaxis Friendly Schools (BAnFS) Accreditation framework will then be piloted within these settings during the following academic year (2024/2025), before we make a wider offer to all schools across the region.
Each pilot school will be offered two ARK Anaphylaxis Rescue Kits (suitable for primary school settings), delivered by Arcadia Medical. The ARK Anaphylaxis Rescue Kit has been designed so that schools can store and make easily accessible medical devices used in the event of an anaphylactic shock.
If you are interested in supporting this work, please respond by 16th February 2024 to Andrew Bright (nuth.beatanaphylaxis@nhs.net) in order to register your initial interest in participating. You will then be asked to complete and return a short Expression of Interest form to enable us to allocate and target our resources effectively and equitably.

Paediatric Diabetes BPT: Understanding clinical rationale and implementing payment guidance
Wednesday 20th March, 1pm-2pm, via Microsoft Teams
Best Practice Tariffs (BPTs) were first introduced in 2010/11. They are designed to incentivise high quality, cost-effective care with the overall aim of reducing unwarranted variation in clinical quality and to spread best practice.
BPTs support areas of care where there is a strong evidence base and clinical consensus on best practice.
The paediatric diabetes BPT is an annual payment per patient for a year of care. It aims to support clinical services to deliver consistent, high-quality care to children and young people with diabetes.
This webinar will discuss the importance and rationale behind the paediatric diabetes BPT from a clinical point of view, led by National Clinical Lead for CYA Diabetes, Fulya Mehta, as well as the current financial guidance and arrangements for this Best Practice Tariff.
We aim to support a national objective in reducing variation in the implementation of BPTs by considering the background rationale for the paediatric diabetes BPT price and operational application, alongside the context of the national payment landscape and financial practicalities across the NHS.
The session is open to anyone interested in the operation of the paediatric diabetes BPT, especially those involved in the financial and clinical planning and implementation of it.
