There are some new platforms to be aware of which your young person(s) may be using or may come up in conversation over the festive period.
- OmeTV (om-ee-tv). OmeTV is the replacement for Chat Roulette and Omegle, where you can create an account and immediately be connected to a video call with anyone in the world at random and keep clicking through. Its predecessors were shut down because of the amount of CSE (child sexual exploitation) cases, malicious material etc. and OmeTV follows the same format. There have already been multiple cases involving local YP and residential homes that involve OmeTV.
- Bluesky is the Twitter/X alternative that people are migrating to, to try and get away from a lot of the harmful rhetoric and content on Twitter/X. It’s essentially “old” Twitter in its usage, set up and usability. They’ve got a genuine moderation team in place, not bots so anything untoward is being dealt with by humans, but with over a million new users signing up per day they are experiencing issues.
