Thanks to the Child Health and Wellbeing Network, our team member Julie Wilson was able to become a Youth Mental Health First Aider. The 2-day course was delivered to the network members across the northeast by a Mental Health England instructor. The programme discussed mental health ill health, the risk factors and how to support young people aged 8-18 years old if they are experiencing mental health issues. Julie found the training to be useful in her role especially the ALGEE acronym that is used to respond to concerns; Assess the risk, Listen non-judgementally, Give reassurance, Encourage appropriate professional support, Encourage self-help tools and other support.
“It reinforced many of the topics we discuss in our HeadStarter course about how self-help tools can help individuals manage their mental wellbeing. The knowledge I got from the course will not only support the work we do in schools, I will also use it in everyday life to look after my own wellbeing and those around me.”
