The very first morning with the Mayor in Redcar and Cleveland took place on Thursday 27th March 2025. 47 children from 4 schools attended and participated in an activity morning that featured a question and answer session with the current Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland. Children from Westgarth, Ings Farm, Bydales and Nunthorpe prepared questions which kicked off the morning. Questions were themed around what the Mayor would do to combat knife crime, anti-social behaviour and even his thoughts on the local economy. Questions around local aspirations, the quality of life and factors that effect the environment were all discussed and answered fully.
Following the question and answer session, children accessed four workshops. Two of the workshops were kindly delivered by students from Prior Pursglove College. One workshop was themed around aspirations. Current Prior Pursglove Students shared their story of what they were studying, what college life is like and what they wanted to do in the future. The second Prior Pursglove workshop was themed around local pride and local opportunities.
James from HeadStart delivered a workshop that was themed all around poverty. This workshop looked to gauge the thoughts, gather responses and assess understanding of what poverty is, how it effects the community and any strategies to combat it. Lastly, the Mayor led the final workshop where children discussed the importance of having a voice, youth democracy and how decisions are made within full council meetings. Children began to understand how decisions that were made affected the local communities lives.
