NO-vember – a time to say NO to people, places, situations and habits that drain your energy.
Professional and personal boundaries are an integral part of self-care and wellbeing practices. We all have commitments and responsibilities both in the workplace and in our personal lives. Part of a healthy self-care regime includes making sure you have enough energy to attend to the ‘have to’s’ whilst also making sure there is enough energy left for YOU.
So this month take some time to reflect on what you might be able to say ‘no’ to in order to bring a bit of energy back for yourself. Not all of us are good at setting clear boundaries with ourselves or others but it can be learned and it is an integral part of looking after our mental wellbeing.
Some simple tips for setting boundaries:
- Understand why you need the boundary
- Clearly state your boundary
- Be direct
- Don’t apologise or give long explanations
- Use a calm and polite tone
Setting healthy boundaries can help prevent burnout and fatigue and is a healthy communication tool to support your wellbeing.
