Young people across Redcar and Cleveland Schools have achieved and been working towards the Silver Award. The HeadStart pathway has 3 different awards that young people can achieve. The Bronze introduces them to emotional wellbeing and how they can support it, establishing how to manage and maintain good mental health. The Silver award continues the work of the Bronze. Thus training the young people to become peer mentors within their school. The Gold award allows these trained peer mentors to deliver the Bronze award to the next HeadStarter cohort within their school.
By the end of this Spring Term, over 230 young people will have achieved the Silver Award. Their peer mentor training has showcased their skills to be a great support within their school community. Many groups have already delivered 1 to 1 support, ran campaigns and carried out assemblies.
As part of the Silver Award the pupils have worked with the HeadStart Team to identify issues others may face when at school that may cause upset or stress. They have then written some creative and realistic case studies about how these issues may manifest in school, with individuals. Finally, showing ways that they could support these individuals with the issues and support that young person’s emotional wellbeing. During the sessions, pupils show a great understanding of empathy, compassion, understanding, and safeguarding. Their incredible contributions and abilities to improve their skills have blown the team away. These pupils should be proud of the work they are doing to offer a wide range of guidance and support to others.
