In our last staff wellbeing article we talked about not piling a whole heap of pressure on yourself in January to be a brand new you and we are expanding on that theme today. January can come with some unspoken pressure to be healthier, better, improved and set ourselves some ridiculously unachievable goals that are hard to sustain. Often these pressures have an underlying theme of denying ourselves or using a harsh and critical approach to push ourselves.
The team at HeadStart encourages self-improvement and setting realistic goals to feel better about yourself and your goals however our approach would be gentle; think baby steps, small, achievable goals that you can manage with kindness and compassion to yourselves. And that if you didn’t quite meet all your goals today you can try again tomorrow.
School life is busy and you are giving energy out to others all day so it is important that you have some energy for yourself too. When we take care of ourselves we are in better place to be able to do our jobs well and take care of our loved ones. It is difficult to do that if you are running on empty.
So our words of wisdom are just to strive for ‘good enough’ = at work, at home, for you. Perfectionism heaps a whole heap of extra pressure on everything and can also have that same undertone of harsh criticism that you are not quite enough. You are absolutely enough exactly as you are.
