Youth Mental Health First Aid training!

Learn Youth Mental Health First Aid skills to support young people in our underserved communities  – book places now to learn new skills to help child and young people with their mental health and wellbeing.

We are really excited to share with you our next wave of dates for the Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) two-day qualification as run by our recently trained YMHFA instructors from our NHS Charities Together project, Tackling Inequalities for Children (TIC). We are incredibly proud of our instructors and grateful for all the hard work they and their organisations have put in to the training and preparation of these courses.

In a recent report funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, the number of young people aged 5-16 with a mental health condition has increased from 1 in 9 in 2017 to 1 in 6 in 2020. (Access the full report).

This qualification will be a full two-day face-to-face course – offered at a wide range of venues here in the North East and North Cumbria. Numbers are limited to 16 per course so book now to avoid disappointment. This is the Second wave of courses and more dates and times will be offered later in the summer.

The course is aimed at people working into our underserved communities and  working with children and young people aged 8 to 19 who need support with their mental health and wellbeing.

This course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider, giving you:

  • An in-depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate
  • Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive
  • Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing

We are offering this course fully subsidised due to funding from our NHS CT Tackling Inequalities for Children project and in partnership with amazing charities based in communities across the region who have been directly impacted by the pandemic.  This offer is for Network members (worth £360 per participant) and by registering to take part you agree to pay the full cost of the course to the Network if you do not attend or cancel at least 48 hours prior the course starting.

  • To be a registered member of the Child Health and Wellbeing Network
  • Be over 16
  • Work with children and young people within an underserved community
  • Agree to pay full cost (£360) of course for non-attendance

Demand is expected to be high for courses and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please click on the links for the individual courses to register under each venue name above. We will have a reserve list for each course and please note that registering does not guarantee your place on the course. We will confirm your place within the week of signing up.

We are aware that there are some existing initiatives to develop YMHFA in some parts of our region and across different disciplines – our programme is to supplement this resource. We currently plan for our future courses to be offered to those working within the Network’s priority areas (mental health, family support, poverty, additional needs and vulnerability), but members are invited to highlight specific gaps for us to target as part of our YMHFA offer.
